The work that Salix Living and Salix Homes are doing to transform empty buildings across Salford into new, affordable homes has been showcased on the small screen.
ITV Granada broadcast a week-long series entitled – Where’s Home – highlighting the impact of the housing crisis in the North West, where the waiting list for a new home grows by the day while thousands of buildings across the region lie empty, derelict and become an eyesore to local residents.
The final installment of the five-part series looked at whether bringing empty buildings back into use as affordable homes for local people could provide a potential solution to the crisis, highlighting the positive work that Salix Homes and Salix Living have been doing.
The programme, which aired on Granada Reports on Friday 20th July, featured several of our recent projects. This included The Star Inn Pub in Eccles, which is in the process of being transformed into a range of 1 and 2 bed apartments, and our recent shop conversion on Eccles New Road in Weaste which brought a derelict shop- which lay empty for many years- back to life, creating an eye-catching new 2 bedroom apartment for a local man and his son.
Jonathan Drake, service director for Salix Living took part in an interview with ITV’s Daniel Hewitt, where he discussed how the regeneration and repurposing of empty buildings is proving to be a cost-effective way of creating new homes, when compared to the cost of building brand new properties from scratch.
Following his interview, Jonathan said: “Salix Homes is committed to rethinking how we do things in order to meet the demands of the modern world and repurposing empty buildings could hold the key to solving the housing crisis – so we were delighted that ITV has helped us to raise the profile of the work we are doing in this area.”
